What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of efficient body conditioning through a unique system of strengthening and stretching exercises.  Pilates is "core conditioning," focusing on the center of the body.  The core consists of the deep abdominal muscles, along with those closest to the spine.  Pilates exercises develop core control by integrating the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle.  The emphasis is on quality of movement rather than number of repetitions.  The technique was developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 1900s to maximize the results achieved from a deeper workout and minimize the time spent.  In the beginning, only professional dancers knew of its benefit--but now the secret is out!
Pilates is a gentle way of working out.  It is wonderful for everyone, but especially for senior citizens, those with injuries, and after physical therapy.  With less movement and more emphasis on deep muscle work, the body becomes stabilized and the support of the skeletal system becomes balanced and strong.  The combined practice of Yoga and Pilates has proven to be highly efficacious in establishing and maintaining a healthy physique for practitioners of all ages.  After just a few months, one feels graceful and lithe.  Give it a try...you'll love it!
