What is Yoga?

Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning "unity," which refers to the balanced union of mind, body, and spirit--the ultimate goal of every Yoga practitioner.  Yoga is not a religion; it is an ancient Indian philosophy that focuses on personal fulfillment through intellectual, physical, and spiritual self-mastery.

There are eight branches of Yoga practice; the asana (physical posture) is the third stage. Through the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar and other gurus, the asana has come to be the most popular form of Yoga practiced here in the West.  Every day, more and more people discover in Yoga a path to physical well-being and inner peace.
The benefits resulting from the regular practice of Yoga (at least two to three times a week) are multifold. It teaches us to live in the present, to see that now is the most precious treasure we possess.  Yoga strengthens body and mind, increases flexibility, and promotes good health by massaging the inner organs and digestive system.  Stress melts away and insomnia vanishes, replaced by restful sleep and colorful dreams.  The spine becomes supple, relieving back pain and muscle tension.  Freed from anxiety, the cluttered mind clears and the spirit has room to blossom.
